GOLDEN GROOVE - DRUMMING WITH SENIORS

What is Golden Groove?

Golden Groove is wellness program for senior communities.  It uses drumming, music and
movement to enhance the well-being of their residents.  The program is 30 minutes in length and
experiential in nature.  The protocol is designed to encourage each individual to participate at a physical level he/she feels comfortable with.

What are the Benefits of the Program?
Golden Groove is
INCLUSIVE
It is a great activity for men and women of all cultures and ability levels.  No music or rhythm
training is needed to participate.  Staff and residents can play side by side.

Golden Groove is EMPOWERING:
It gives everyone a voice.  Each individual’s contribution is needed and valued as part of the whole experience.

Golden Groove is FUN:

It brings laughter to the community and encourages participants to ‘Feel the Groove’!

Golden Groove is THERAPEUTIC(Enhances Dimensions of Wellness)

  • Physical:  Golden Groove Protocol encourages fine and gross motor skill movement.  Drumming is performed while sitting down, so most people, even those with difficulty being ambulatory can have an enjoyable and uplifting experience creating music and moving their bodies.
  • Emotional: Golden Groove creates an inviting atmosphere that promotes a joyful attitude.  People are positively affected as they feel the vibrations of the drums. They smile and laugh often and begin giving themselves permission to move their bodies to the groove.
  • Social:   Golden Groove inspires people of all ability levels and brings positive energy to the group. It encourages creative expression and gives people permission to play, communicate, connect and have fun with each other.
  • Spiritual: “The drum touches that part of us that knows nothing of cell phones, televisions and
  • computers. The drum connects individuals to inner peace, self-expression, and our very basic life force.”  Freidman, The Healing Power of the Drum
  • Mental:  “Scientific Research now supports drumming as a tool to decrease anxiety and stress, and improve mental attitude.”  Freidman, The Healing Power of the Drum
  • Cognitive:  Golden Groove Protocol helps to enhance auditory and memory skills through call and response and singing generation-specific songs.

7 Evidence-Based Elements of Health RHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming

Stress-Reduction
Health RHYTHMS (Group Composite Drumming) strengthened the immune system by increasing Natural Killer (NK) cell activity. (Bittman, Alternative Therapies, 2001) This protocol also reversed multiple components of the human stress response on the genomic level, not just reducing but reversing 19 genetic switches that turn on the stress response believed responsible in the development of common diseases. (Bittman, Medical Science Monitor, 2005)

Regulation
“The only way to move from these super-high anxiety states, to calmer more cognitive states, is rhythm.  Patterned, repetitive rhythmic activity: walking, running, dancing, drumming, repetitive meditative breathing – you use brain stem-related somatosensory networks which make your brain accessible to relational (limbic brain) reward and cortical thinking.” (Dr. Bruce Perry, Aces Connection, 2014)

Brain Health
“Music making offers extensive exercise for brain cells and their synapses (connections). It would be difficult to find another activity that engages so many of the brain’s systems.”(Weinberger, N., 1998)

Exercise
Drumming is an accessible exercise which burns calories and improves mood and may reduce the risk of disease. A Norwegian study of 25,000 women age 20-54 that performed leisure time exercises at least 4 hours/week experienced a 37% reduction in the risk of breast cancer. (Thune, Brenn, Lund, Gaard, 1997)

Self-Expression
Health RHYTHMS empowers people to move beyond their perceived boundaries.

Camaraderie/Connection
A 1992 Duke University Study linked lengthened lifespan with having a close confidant. Health RHYTHMS protocol builds camaraderie and support by creating a safe space where people feel comfortable sharing and offering support.

Emapthy/Respect
Health RHYTHMS protocol creates a level playing field where support of growth and development is encouraged. As equal partners in this process participants often discover inner strength and encouragement by those sharing the experience.
